I’m Ready For Big Mama’s…TV Show

I am really excited that a local restaurant is going to have its own reality show on The Food Network. I cannot wait for the show to start tonight at 9:30.

Big Mama’s Kitchen up here in North Omaha serves up soul food with a lot of love. Jeff and I, and Jim and Mary decided to go there for dinner tonight in preparation to watch the show. I had the Smothered Fried Chicken, Mashed Potatoes and Chicken Gravy, Corn Bread and Sweet Potato Cheesecake. Jeff had Fried Chicken with White Gravy, Jim had the Chicken Fried Steak and Mashed Potatoes, and Mary had the Fried Catfish, Mac n’ Cheese, and Coleslaw. We all got Corn Bread with our meals.

Yummmmmmm! I cannot speak for anyone else, but my chicken was very good and the mashed potatoes are definitely real (not the boxed, reconstituted potato flakes.) The corn bread was delish! And lastly, the sweet potato cheesecake was decadent and rich. I can say that I was hearing a lot of mmmmm, mmmmm, MMMMMMMmmmmm’s around the table.

It might be called soul food, but this is just plain ol’ good down-home cookin’. I loved it. It immediately took me back to the great meals that Jeff’s mom made. She was famous for her fried chicken and milk gravy. Obviously, I cannot eat this everyday or I would blow up like a balloon in no time. But it is so good and worth downing a few calories once in a while.

In the meantime, I will still be going to Big Mama’s Sandwich Shop for lunch. They have a Cuban Sandwich that makes me salivate just mentioning! Black Forest ham, Big Mama’s smoked pork tenderloin, dill pickle chips, Swiss cheese, mustard and Big Mama’s mayo, all grilled on the Panini Press. OMG! GOOD!

————————————UPDATE————————————-

Okay! Post watching the show. How could you not LOVE this family! What a loving, funny, nutty, crazy bunch! I found out that the 16 yr old that was getting her license goes to Central where Jeff works. She is such a sweetie. She came over and gave Jeff a hug when we were there. She recently broke her hand at basketball and has it splinted. Gladys’ daughter was the server at our table and she was so excited for the show. She said that they were all going over to Tiger Tom’s as a family to watch the episode. I am genuinely happy for this great family to get this opportunity. How fun!

Moldavite is Beautiful!

This post is hush hush. But since I don’t think my daughter-in-law reads my blog, I’m going to share with  you a necklace that I just made for her.

A little background: I called my son M to ask what K likes with Christmas in mind. He rattled off a few interests of hers and the one that caught my attention was “moldavite”. I said, what the heck is moldavite? He said, “well, she is into crystals and stones and that moldavite was one that she likes.”

Of course this made it interesting to me. So I looked up moldavite on Google. It is a fragment from a meteor that fell to earth 15 million years ago in present-day Nördlinger Ries … 99 % of all moldavite finds are from Southern Bohemian localities, 1% were found in Southern Moravian (Czech Republic) localities. A really great website to learn about this amazing natural crystal-like stone is www.aboutmoldavites.com. If you want to read about moldavite’s metaphysical properties, you can go to www.moldaviteman.com/metaproperties.html

Ellipsoid Fragment of Moldavite

Moldavite is just “cool”! This beautiful piece was found in the Czech Republic.

So I took myself to my favorite online store…ebay and sure enough, found a seller of moldavite, FrantFrant. I found this piece that I could buy outright without having to bid for it and simply bought it. I was a little worried that it might not get here in time (all the way from the Czech Republic) for me to make something with it, but luckily, I had ordered it with plenty of time to spare.

FrantFrant did a great job of getting it to me in a protected wrap and a certificate of authenticity. It tells me where the fragment was found, its size and shape etc.

I was so excited when it arrived and I opened the package immediately. I went straight away to my desk and made a wired-wrapping for it (only two tries) and made it into a necklace. I think she is going to love it.

I sure hope K loves it as much as I do. Ha, I liked it so much I ordered another fragment for myself!

What do you think?
